The Flight
1. When will we go?
We fly early in the morning because this is the coolest time of the day, with the lightest winds. This ensures maximum performance from the balloons and allows soft landings.
2. Where will we go?
Balloons travel with the wind. We really only know when we get there, and every flight is different.
3. How far will we fly?
Again, this depends on the wind speed and direction. Morning winds in Cappadocia are normally light and variable, so you are just as likely to go around in a circle as fly in a straight line. You may not fly very far, but it will be fun getting there!
4. How high will we go?
We normally fly at altitudes up to 2000 feet above ground, although sometimes it is necessary to go higher to find different wind directions.
5. Is it cold up there?
Even in mid summer Cappadocia can be quite cold at dawn, but once in the air it is warmer because there is no wind and there is some radiant heat from the burner over your head
6. What will I be able to see?
What will you be able to see? As we take off you will be amazed at the panoramic view of the landscape below. As we climb higher you will be able to understand how the amazing Cappadocia region was formed, and nearer the ground you will get a close-up of the 'fairy chimneys' and the cave dwellings many of them contain.
7. Where will we land?
When it is time to land the Pilot will brief the passengers and point out the likely landing site. The flying area has many good landing sites, usually close to a road or track accessible to your minibuses.
8. Should I bring a camera?
Yes – you will be amazed at the number of photo opportunities during your flight. Just make sure you have plenty of film/digital capacity.
9. What should I wear?
Please wear long sleeves, trousers and flat shoes (trainers or walking boots are ideal). T-shirts, shorts, skirts and dresses are not recommended.
10. Am I fit to fly?
People should not fly if they are suffering any serious illness. If in any doubt, you should contact a doctor as we are not qualified to assess your condition.
11. What if I am pregnant?
You MUST NOT FLY if you are, or think you are, pregnant.
12. Is there an age limit?
There are no age limits, but children under 7 and adults over 70 will only be flown at the discretion of the Pilot.
13. What if I am scared of heights?
Well, you won’t be alone. Many people are scared of heights, but ballooning is different. You do not get any sensation of movement or speed; the ground simply seems to fall away. You will quickly lose any fear you had; in fact, many people who were initially a bit scared want to go straight back up once they have landed.
14. What happens if the weather is not suitable for flying?
This happens very rarely during our main season, but is more likely during the winter months. If you pilot decides the conditions are not suitable for flying, you will receive a full refund of any payments made to Sultan Balloons.
